Where do you get inspiration for your latest project? Do you go to galleries and museums? Do you frequent craft shows? Are you a YouTube do-it-yourself junkie? Or do you take classes?
Me? I do them all. I get inspiration in all sorts of places.
One of my favorite places to get inspiration is at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. They offer two programs that are perfect for “dabblers” and experts alike.
¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour is a great program for adults. Have you always wanted to try your hand at tin work, straw applique, collage, or gold leaf? This is the place for you!
On the first Thursday of almost every month, you can sign up to learn new techniques in a fun and relaxed social setting. Invite your friends, order snacks and wine or beer from Pop Fizz and then get busy making art.
Guest artists are invited to teach the classes. They usually have artwork in one of the museum exhibitions and teach something inspired by their artwork.
There is a $5 suggested donation to help with the cost of materials and to pay the guest artists. Make sure to sign up ahead of time! June will have artist Delilah Montoya whose work is in the “Qué Chola” exhibition. Again, this is an adults only event!
Are your children budding artists? ¡Vamos al Museo! is the perfect way to introduce your kids to art making.
On the first Saturday of almost every month, a guest artist leads a hands-on art experience for families. The morning begins with a visit to the art museum. It is a time to look at and be inspired by the art. Then it’s off to the Creative Classroom, located in the Pete V. Domenici Education Building for fun family art making!
As with Happy Arte Hour, there is a suggested $5 donation to help pay the guest artist and for supplies. Please sign up to make sure there is plenty of space and supplies!
I enjoy volunteering for both of these programs and have even taught at both of them! Hope to see you at one or the other, or both!
I do have one more bit of spectacular inspiration to throw your way. Nativo Lodge Artist Room Open House is Thursday evening, May 23, 2019, from 5pm -8pm. If you have never been, I strongly urge you to go! Rooms are transformed into large scale installation works of art! Here is a photo gallery of some of the rooms. Go see them in person!
