I am going to assume that like most crafters, I have more supplies than I could ever possibly use in a lifetime. I have stashes of beautiful paper, Altoids tins, varieties of scissors, ribbon in every color, and enough glitter to last for decades.
I spend a lot of time searching for top quality supplies, but also can work with recycled items. We are lucky to have an abundance of great places for art supplies in the Albuquerque area. I’ve put together a “starter” list of locally owned businesses that sell great art supplies. This is by no means a complete list, so please let me know of any place I have left off the list!
Brick and Mortar
Found on 4th – “A destination for vintage and artisan goods with a focus on the unique…” My favorite little North Valley gem! From vintage game pieces to handmade cards to quirky ephemera, I always find cool and unusual items for my mixed media art.
Creative Culture ABQ – I seriously did a happy dance when I found out this place was opening! Their Facebook page says it all, “A creative collection of exotic paper from all over the world! Greeting cards for any and all occasions! A selection of favorite art supplies! The best and most popular pieces from Craft Fantastic! A maker’s paradise!” They also have a small selection of Czech glass beads AND they offer an amazing assortment of workshops!
Artisan Santa Fe – Yes, they have a store in Albuquerque! This forty year old business has been a go-to place where fine and novice artists alike can find quality art supplies.
Hip Stitch – Albuquerque’s original sewing lounge. Hip, fresh modern fabrics, patterns, books. Classes in quilting, sewing, embroidery and more. I don’t sew, but the choices of fabrics they have makes me think I need to incorporate fabric in my art!
New Mexico Clay – From their website -“If you ask any avid potter, nothing feels more energizing and centering than crafting pottery with your bare hands. We feel this passion every day, and it’s a feeling we want to share with the community as ABQ’s destination for all things clay. In our on-site studio, we host pottery classes of varying skill levels, even for folks who want to try their hand at Raku. That means we fire to cones 04, 5, 6, and 10! In need of tools and raw materials? We have everything you may need, big and small. That means kilns, pugmills, and pottery wheels from Brent, Artista, and Shimpo for your own home studio, plus a huge selection of bats, bulk clay, unique glazes, sculpting kits, Kemper trimming tools, sponges, molds, and more. Whether you’re looking to take a class, pick up some materials, check out our studio, or make a simple pinch pot – come center yourself today!”
Mama’s Minerals – Beaders and jewelry makers will love their large selection of beads in stone and semi-precious gemstones, crystal and glass beads, as well as tools and findings.
Thunderbird Jewelry Supply – For the more serious jewelry maker! Everything you need for silversmithing, lapidary supplies, excellent selection of seed beads, displays and more!
NM Bead and Fetish – New Mexico Bead and Fetish is an on-line wholesale store with a retail location in Albuquerque, NM. We offer same day shipping on most items. We specialize in high quality merchandise and outstanding customer service.
The Yarn Store at Nob Hill – Your one-stop neighborhood shop for knitting, crochet, and needlework of all kinds! We host classes, special events, and FREE open knitting during store hours.
Stone Mountain Bead Gallery – Stone Mountain Bead Gallery has a major selection of fabulous beads and supplies! They can also help you repair, re-string or find the perfect beads for your existing pieces. Be sure to check out their large selection of finished and imported jewelry!
Vintage Paper and Paint – This wonderful Etsy shop has cool ephemera packs, digital downloads, an incredible assortment of furniture paints, waxes, sealers, brushes and tools.
Serious Beader – Beads and sequins and tiny things and vintage jewelry supplies and exotic trims and more! This Etsy shop has such a wonderfully eclectic selection of goodies!
AfroBeadia – Even though the owner no longer lives in Albuquerque, I have to give a big shout out to her fabulous Etsy shop! This is your place for stunning ethnic beads!
Rio Grande Jewelry Supply – Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING for your jewelry making needs. Whether you are a novice or fine jewelry artist, they have what you need. Check out their website and be amazed at the selection of supplies!
Like I said above, this is by no means a complete list of all the great places to buy arts and crafts supplies in Albuquerque. I tried to focus on locally owned businesses, but of course we have Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnn’s in town as well. Please don’t forget that you can also find great supplies at yard and estate sales and the flea market! Tell me where you find your supplies and I’ll keep adding to the list above!
