Mad Skills: Workshops July 2019

Beginners Introduction to Desert Botanical Perfumery Co. – Begin learning the basics of botanical perfumery and New Mexico’s high desert fragrance palette and create your own desert perfume! Participants will explore fragrance families and introductory scent blending, bringing home a 5mL roller of their own oil based botanical fragrance. These classes fill up fast, register early!

Kei and Molly Block Printing Workshop – We are so pleased to offer a South Asian block printing workshop this summer, led by visiting artists Meeta Mastani and Dr. Sarah Khan. Using this ancient block printing technique, we will learn how to print mud resist patterns using authentic wood blocks, and then will dye the fabric in natural dyes to create one-of-a-kind stoles. Meeta and Sarah most recently taught this printing process at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, ME. We are honored that they will be sharing their knowledge with us this summer!

Power and Light Press Printshop Pop-Up and Letterpress Demo – In celebration of Power and Light Press 10th anniversary, founder Kyle is excited to be resurrecting a project from the early days. This summer, she’ll be hitting the road in an old “Moveable Type” mobile printshop on a tour of some of the United States, visiting our beloved retailers and hosting public pop ups and printing demos. After years of doing trade-shows and working with reps (and the internet) to sell their line, Kyle is looking forward to returning to the scrappy roots of her business, meeting directly with customers in person, and sharing the craft of letterpress printing. Vintage Collages – Caroline Lawson , from Vintage Market & Design & Vintage Paper & Paint, will be teaching this class. You will be making two collages on book covers using the vast collection of old paper, documents, postcards, photos, etc. from Vintage Paper and Paint. The class samples are only examples, your collages will be put together from the items you choose. All supplies will be provided. EXCEPT your favorite fussy cut scissors and your preferred glue for paper crafts. When: July 13, 10-5 Where: SW Craft Connection Cost: $60

Watercolor Papercuts – BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND and selling out, we’re repeating this workshop favorite! Delicate and intricate! These beautiful paper cuts can be displayed on cards or framed to create a unique art piece! Introduction to the Wonderful World of Book Arts – The following class will be held at New Mexico Art League, 3409 Juan Tabo Blvd, NE. Payment is through NMAL, click on the link below to sign-up.

Introduction to the Wonderful World of Book Arts – If you have ever been even a little curious about books arts. . . this class is for you! We will explore this unique medium using traditional books as a framework. Once you have these techniques down, you can expand and make more complicated constructions of books based on these simple original forms. Each week we will explore a specific structure including a simple section pamphlet stitched book, whirlwind books, accordion books, flag books, scroll books, palm leaf books, tunnel books, etc. While making these books we will discuss the use of various materials, different types of glues, and the basic rules of book building. If time permits, Mita Saldana will guide you as you focus on a project of your own using the structures learned. When you finish this class you will have an extensive working knowledge of the materials, tools and the many types of artist book structures to incorporate into your own future projects. A materials fee of $30 should be paid directly to the instructor at the first class meeting. Sign up early; class size limited.     Pennysmiths Paper is hosting a variety of workshops in July and August (and beyond)

    Sunday, July 28th from 5-7pm is MAIL ART with Marisa Mott. Learn to decorate, paint, illustrate and illuminate your envelopes for mailing and note cards!

    Wednesday, July 31st also from 5-7pm is BULLET JOURNALING and BEYOND with Theresa Varela. This class is for anyone already familiar with bullet journaling and would like to take it to the next level.
