Mad Skills: Workshops August 2019

¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour – On the first Thursday of the month, NHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting, which includes snacks, refreshments, and beer & wine for sale from Pop Fizz. This is a great opportunity for friends to hang out, a unique date night option, or a place to come solo and connect with fellow art enthusiasts. Please pre-register using the link HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare).

This month, work with guest artist Sean Wells who will discuss working in the contemporary style inspired by traditional Spanish Colonial Art forms. She will lead us in a painting workshop using acrylic paints on canvas. Paintings created during this month’s HAH or Vamos will be voluntarily included in an exhibition in the education building.

Colcha Community Stitch Along – Join the NHCC’s monthly gathering for colcheras of all skill levels led by Annette Gutierrez Turk. If you are beginning or advanced in the traditional New Mexican style of embroidery, bring your current colcha project along and enjoy these monthly, informal, community work sessions to share ideas, resources and encouragement!

Making It and Painting It with Holly Roberts – Master the elusive art of transferring images to create striking work in this unique workshop, which combines the arts of painting and applied imagery. We cover the basics of working with acrylic paints to establish powerful substrates (underlying layers) that allow you to build images through collage and different transfer techniques. Students learn several approaches to working with paint, as well as basic adhesion techniques and multiple transfer processes. Along with photographs, you are encouraged to use any combination of mixed media to produce the collaged pieces that will build the final finished images.

Stained Glass: Beginning – Explore the art of stained glass in this class for beginners. You’ll get hands-on experience as you learn to cut glass, build your soldering skills, and practice assembly techniques for both copper foil and lead came. You’ll complete one project using each technique. The instructor will provide all the tools you need.

Mixed Media Dyptich – BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND and selling out, we’re repeating this workshop favorite! Transform Creative Culture ABQ’s media boards into wall art using fabulous papers, stencils, paints and more! Collage and paint techniques make these pieces completely customizable.

Rugs! Rugs! And a Bowl! at Hip Stitch – Cindy’s been sharing her tips and techniques for making the uber popular jelly roll rugs and NOW is extending her teaching to two new rugs as well as the jelly roll bowl! You can now choose between the ever popular jelly roll rug, the new Fuse, Fold, and Stitch rug (layer cake friendly), chenille rug, or a jelly roll bowl. For this class choose which one you want to make and receive a project-specific supply list.

Crafty with Clay at Thirsty Eye – Bring the kiddos down to Thirsty Eye Saturday afternoon and have your self a specialty coffee or a cold craft beer while the little ones discover what they can build with a little time, some imagination, and a ball of local NM clay! Miss. Jodi of Hands in Clay and her creative crew will be in the covered patio from noon until 3pm making sure the kids have everything they need to get crafty. Oh and don’t feel left out, adults, you are welcome to try your hand at clay play, too!

Stamped Cuff Bracelets – Learn how to make your very own sterling silver and copper stamped cuff bracelets, adorned with small stones. ((Turquoise and Black Onyx pictured here)) Techniques covered:  stamping, soldering, bezel-setting, oxidizing, polishing. Material used:  sterling silver, copper, genuine turquoise, black onyx. ***Turquoise provided for this class comes from a valued source and varies in color.

Painting and Mixed Media Workshop – Students will gain skills and explore collage, mixed media and painting while creating 2D or 3D artworks. Students may experiment with various media found in the studio like acrylic paint, fabric, watercolor, wood and found object assemblage. Students will work independently with individual support from instructors. Finished artworks will be exhibited at OFFCenter. Students are also welcome to bring personal items that indicate their interests.
