Mad Skills: Workshops September 2019

Papel Picado and Paper Flower Workshop – Learn how to make papel picado (cut paper banners) with community artist Chris Baca, as well as paper flowers with Marigold committee members Margarita and Roger to decorate your ofrenda or parade float this year! All are welcome! Please feel free to invite your friends and family! Please also feel free to bring a food dish to share with the community.

Polymer Clay ClassPolymer Clay Cane- In this class we will use a leaf cane.  You will learn can reduction, skinner blend.  We will use canes to cover larger clay beads.  We will bake the finished pieces in class and you will leave with a variety of finished beads to create jewelry.

Instagram for ArtistsLearn how to use Instagram to show, promote and (possibly) sell your artwork, while meeting other artists.  Include: setting up an account, choosing (or changing) a username, writing a bio and captions, formatting pictures, and using hashtags.  Tips about personal v. business accounts, multiple images v. story, still v. video, cross-posting to Facebook, and more depending on participants needs.

Student Night at the UNM Art Museum: DIY Terrariums – Come explore the UNM Art Museum and spend an evening with your fellow students getting crafty! We will be creating our own terrarium of recycled and natural materials to decorate your dorm room. Please bring your own clean glass jar (this is a great chance to recycle a used jar you have on hand) and any small trinkets/decorations you would like to include in your terrarium.

Remedios of New Mexico: Salves, Tinctures, Plant BasedPLANT BASED MEDICINE WORKSHOP (vegan friendly) Second workshop in our medicine making series. Materials are included in the workshop. This workshop is for level 2 medicine makers who know some basic herbs and infusions and some plant identification.

You will take home a salve and formula that we will make during our class. We will discuss our next set of herbs for **skin and inflammation that causes pain**. We will take a short foraging walk in the nearby bosque after the class. This will primarily discuss and focus on plants used for medicine making and curanderismo, and aid in plant identification.

Paper ChandelierBACK BY POPULAR DEMAND and selling out, we are repeating this workshop favorite! Construct a paper chandelier (Pajaki) using colorful string and decorative paper. This traditional Polish folk craft is a springtime decoration used to warm and brighten the home after the long winter months.

Beginner Cookie DecoratingIn this first workshop, Decorating Iced Sugar Cookies, we will show you the basic techniques you will use to create your own designer cookies. We will learn how to mix colors and varied consistency of icing, piping techniques along with how to transfer your own designs onto the cookie. Each student will take home 6 beautifully decorated cookies , all done by you. At the end of the class. There will be additional items
