Mad Skills: Workshops January 2020

Free Printmaking Extravaganza – Remarque Printshop will be hosting a printmaking showcase. Come learn more about the possibilities and marvels of printmaking! The goal of this event is to give curious artists and printmakers a chance to see a sampling of the myriad printmaking techniques in action. We will have artists working in 5 different techniques simultaneously around our workshop for the span of two hours. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions and talk with the artists as they work and demonstrate their techniques. Supervised children are invited as well. You are welcome to stay the whole time, or just pop in for a few minutes. Techniques “on display” will be, relief linocut, Collagraph, monotype, drypoint etching and photo polymer.

Comprehensive Retablo Workshop – In this comprehensive full-day workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to learn the historic process of preparing and painting traditional retablos featuring the Saints of New Mexico on wood boards from professional Santera Sean Wells. Sean will take students from the first steps of selecting wood and making hand-made gesso to using natural pigments and finishing the board. Sean teaches the traditional methods handed down for this rare art form born from the Spanish Colonists of Northern New Mexico and discusses the stories behind the imagery. Sean will teach techniques in the context of her personal and the regional history. Students will leave with an understanding of the process of painting a traditional retablo and a deeper appreciation for the Spanish Colonial arts. Students will also leave with a starter set of materials, a finished piece and a blank board to paint at home as well as more surprises!

Stitch 101 – Come learn the basics of sewing by machine! By the end of the class you will be able to thread a machine and sew fundamental stitches. You can bring your own machine or borrow one of ours at Stitchology!

Handbuilding Class – This class will meet for 3 hours each of the week for four weeks to explore the many options of creating with clay off the wheel. All skill levels welcome – whether you’re touching clay for the first time or looking to expand your work to include new techniques and shaping ideas, this is the class for you. Students will be introduced to both introductory and more advanced techniques. Please see event calendar for class start dates. Register Here. Intro to Boxmaking: Clamshell Box – Mita Saldana, owner of Against the Grain, will be the instructor for this workshop. Learn to construct a library classic that is a box that looks like a book when closed.  When opened it lays flat and has two trays that are suitable for photo displays, presentations or protecting antique plates or books. For this class Mita is taking a different spin, you will be able to choose the size you would like your box to be.  Mita will do the math and cut the boards for your specific box ahead of time. Then we will learn how to construct the box and she will assist you in your measurements and cutting of the decorative papers and book cloth to cover the box.  Through this technique, you should gain a better understanding of how boxes are constructed.   Most materials and tools will be provided. Each student will need to bring PVA glue. Mita will email each student prior to class.

Creative Age: Puppet Making – Albuquerque Museum was selected as one of only 20 museums throughout the United States to receive a grant from Aroha Philanthropies, through its initiative Seeding Vitality Arts in Museums. These workshops highlight exhibitions at Albuquerque Museum through teaching related art classes. Workshops will be 8 two-hour sessions. Attendees must be 55 years or older. This puppetry workshop introduces students to the art of designing, building, and performing fully functioning puppet characters. Participants are introduced to a variety of techniques, with a focus on 3 styles (i.e. buraku, hand and rod, shadow, etc.) based on the collective interests and abilities of the students. This workshop culminates with a presentation fully realized puppet characters.Instructor Devon Ludlow studied with Emmy winning puppeteer Tim Giugni, and then studied in Bulgaria and Brazil. His work focuses on comedy, with a goal of pioneering new techniques in the medium. Ludlow is a trained actor, puppeteer and dancer, with thousands of stage performances off Broadway and internationally. He founded and co-directed the NY International Clown Theatre Festival, and founded theatre/film puppet company The Human Beast Box.

“Make it at Meltdown” Spinner Ring – Back by popular demand: Our “Make it At Meltdown” series offers an out of the ordinary experience for a Thursday evening. Join us at Meltdown Studio as we create a different “make and take” project each month. A spinner ring is a stylish AND comfortable ring with smaller bands that spin around a larger band. This ring is the perfect accessory for fidgeting, meditating your way throughout the day, or just taking a moment to stay focused. You will leave this class with a sterling silver spinner ring made and designed by YOU!Techniques we’ll cover:  texturing, stamping, dapping, soldering, oxidation, polishing. Materials we’ll use:  sterling silver, copper, brass.
